AR Tuberculosis Sanitorium

ARPAST INVESTIGATES THE ARKANSAS TUBERCULOSIS SANATORIUM
NWA, in a small town nestled in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, is home to the former Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium. This incredible institution was the fruition of the dreams of Arkansas State Supreme Court Judge Joseph Hill, Sen. Kie Oldham of Pulaski County, and Dr. C.P. Meriwether, all of whom were afflicted with TB at the time of the idea's inception.
From the day it formally opened on September 10, 1910, until the day of the discharge of its last patient on February 26, 1973, the sanatorium treated over 70,000 patients, with a sizeable number of those being pediatric cases.
The Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium is situated among 896.13 acres at an elevation of 1,055 feet. At its zenith, the Sanatorium was known within medical circles as one of the premier TB institutions in the country. It was a place of refuge, an institution of mercy, and a beacon of hope for those who had nowhere else to turn. -

ARPAST EXPLORES THE PETIT JEAN MOUNTAIN ROCK ART CAVES
Larry and a few of his ARPAST team members recently hiked up Petit Jean Mountain in Morrilton, Arkansas and visited the Rock Art Caves, one of the largest bluff shelters found in the state of Arkansas. Rock House Cave, which can be accessed via the Rock House Cave Trail, was once home to Native Americans well over a thousand years ago. The bluff dwellers who called this shelter home were nomadic hunter-gatherers, hunting with spears since they had yet to invent the bow and arrow. The natives who used this area left behind evidence of their existence in the form of pictographs (paintings on stone) located on the back wall of the cave. The pictographs were created using minerals from the rocks in the area immediately surrounding the cave. The pictures in the cave tell a story of what was important to the Native Americans. Looking at the paintings today, one can only guess what they mean. It should be noted that Rock House Cave is an archaeological historical site, protected by state law. -
USS Razorback Submarine 2008

ARPAST held its 2nd Anniversary party at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum on February 7, 2009 wherein it also held an open investigation of the USS Razorback SS-394, submarine.
Below is a little history of the ship, followed by photos from the party and investigation:
USS Razorback, a Balao-class submarine of the Sandlance variant, was built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. Her keel was laid on 09 September 1943. Razorback was constructed in Drydock #1 at the shipyard, and she was launched, along with two sister ships USS Redfish (SS-395) and USS Ronquil (SS-396), on 27 January 1944. USS Scabbardfish (SS-397) was also launched at the shipyard that day. This was the largest single-day launch of submarines in US history.
She was commissioned on 03 April 1944. Her first Commanding Officer was LCDR Albert W. Bontier, USN.
Razorback conducted five combat patrols during World War II, sinking Japanese vessels, capturing Japanese POWs and rescuing American pilots who had been shot down. At the end of WWII, she was one of only 12 submarines selected to be present in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrender was signed. The above information was copied from the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum website. More information about the history of the USS Razorback SS-394 is available at this link: http://www.aimm.museum/razorback.asp
